The development of the Panzerkampfwagen Tiger Ausführung B (Sd. Kfz. 182), the successor model of the Tiger Ausf. E, was started already in late 1942. The first prototype was finished in October 1943. Further two followed in December. Serial production started in January 1944. Until March 1945, altogether 492 vehicles were delivered. Because Porsche had ordered 50 turrets for his competition model VK 45.02 (P), Porsche Typ 180, these had to be mounted on the first 50 Henschel vehicles after the Porsche design had been rejected. The often claimed designation ”Porscheturm” is not correct. Both turrets were developed by Krupp.

Beginning with vehicle number 51, the turret developed for the Henschel VK 45.03 (H) was used. This turret had a better shaped frontside with a maximum armour thickness of 180 mm. The side plates were arranged steeper so that no cutout for the commander’s cupola was needed.
