During the campaign against France in 1940, the Wehrmacht could capture many armoured Lorraine 37 L tracked tractors. When the development of self propelled guns was started in early 1942, one remembered this chassis because of its predestinated design with the engine in the centre of the vehicle. From May to August 1942, 170 Lorraine 37 L were converted to 7,5 cm Pak 40/1 auf Gw. Lr. S. (f) Marder I (Sd. Kfz. 135). In early 1944, altogether 131 of these vehicles were still in service.
