The development of the Panzerkampfwagen II Ausf. L - battle tank II version L - (Sd. Kfz. 123) goes back to the VK 1301 and VK 1303. The demands were stronger armour and a higher top speed. In early 1943, a series of 100 were made which were also designated Panzerspähwagen (2 cm) - armoured recconnaissance vehicle (2 cm) - (Sd. Kfz. 123) Luchs. The 11.8 ton heavy Luchs - lynx - could reach a top speed of 60 km/h with its 180 HP strong engine. The armoured recconnaissance battalions of the 4. and 9. Panzerdivision received most of the 100 vehicles in early summer 1943.
