Beginning of serial production of the Sd. Kfz. 251 Ausf. A delayed in 1939 due to insufficient production capacity of armour plates of the needed thickness. For this reason, 305 exemplars of the mittlere ungepanzerte Mannschaftstransportwagen (Sd. Kfz. 251) – an unarmoured variant of the Sd. Kfz. 251 – were manufactured until December 1939. The armoured superstructure was made of unhardened carbon steel and was proof against lead bullets of small calibres and small splinters.

This variant is identifiable by the simple vision flaps. The bow plate was made from one piece and was bent in the middle. In the years from 1939 to 1941, this vehicle was regularly assigned to units as alternative to the standard Sd. Kfz. 251. Besides motorised infantry units, some artillery units of Panzer Divisions got such vehicles as towing vehicles for artillery guns.
