The mittlerer Schützenpanzerwagen (IG) (Sd. Kfz. 251/3) and mittlerer Schützenpanzerwagen (IG-Mun) (Sd. Kfz. 251/4) were officially introduced with the A.H.M. from 16th November 1940. The Sd. Kfz. 251/3 was used for transportation of a 7.5 cm le. IG 18 – a light infantry gun – and its crew and ammunition. The Sd. Kfz. 251/4 was an ammunition carrier for additional ammunition of the 7.5 cm le. IG 18. Outwardly, these vehicles can’t be differentiated from a normal Sd. Kfz. 251.

Early in 1943, production of the m. SPW (IG) (Sd. Kfz. 251/3) was omitted and the Sd. Kfz. number was newly assigned to the mittlerer Funkpanzerwagen (Sd. Kfz. 251/3). Only the m. SPW (IG) (Sd. Kfz. 251/4) was continued which was now also used for towing guns. This Sd. Kfz. 251/4 was used as towing vehicle for a 5 cm Pak 38. Note the Balkenkreuz, the tactical number 11 and the unit sign in the shape of a white circle.

This largely covered Sd. Kfz. 251/4 was also used as towing vehicle for a 5 cm Pak 38. According to different K.St.N.’s, the Sd. Kfz. 251/4 was assigned to different units. One Sd. Kfz. 251/4 as ammunition carrier was assigned to a s. Kan. Zug (7.5 cm) which was equipped with Sd. Kfz. 251/9 (K.St.N. 1125 from 21st December 1942 and 1st May 1943). A Gesch. Zug (le. IG) (gp) had two Sd. Kfz. 251/4 as towing vehicles for the two 7.5 cm le. IG 18 and one Sd. Kfz. 251/4 as ammunition carrier (K.St.N. 1123a from 1st March 1943). 5 Sd. Kfz. 251/4 were assigned to a s. Pz. Jg. Zug (3.Gesch.) (gp) whereas three vehicles were used as towing vehicles for the three anti tank guns and two vehicles were used as ammunition carriers (K.St.N. 1145 gp. From 1st March 1943).
