The mittlerer Funkpanzerwagen (Sd. Kfz. 251/3) - an armoured radio vehicle – appeared first in the D 600 of 6th July 1943. Most probably, production started around the turn of the years 1942/43 because some Panzer Divisions reported stocks of the m. Fu. Pz. Wg. (Sd. Kfz. 251/3) in February 1943. By then, the Sd. Kfz. 251/3 was registered as mittlerer Schützenpanzerwagen (IG) – a towing vehicle for a light infantry gun. The illustrated Sd. Kfz. 251/3 Ausf. C was equipped with a less conspicuous Sternantenne D. Note the new base colour Dunkelgelb RAL 7028 which was introduced in 1943. Attachment of the Sternantenne D on the right side of the vehicle was unusual.

Until January 1945, 9 different versions of the Sd. Kfz. 251/3 were intruduced which had different radio equipment. The less conspicuous Sternantenne D was used from the beginning on. In engagement situations, vehicles equipped with the Sternantenne D were hardly differentiable from a normal m. SPW. The illustrated m. Funkpanzerwagen Sd. Kfz. 251/3 Ausf. D belonged to 16. Panzer Division.
