In the course of the first motorisation-program of the Reichswehr, cross-country lorries with a payload of 1.5 tons and three axles were developed beginning in 1926. The first six serial vehicles of the Mercedes-Benz type G 3 were delivered in 1929. The trials were not finished in 1930. First in 1931, serial production was started. Until late 1932, 85 exemplars of the Mercedes-Benz type G 3 were manufactured.
