The trials to mount a 15 cm s.I.G. 33 onto the chassis of a Panzerkampfwagen II (Sd.Kfz. 121) were started in 1940. A prototype using the standard chassis was finished in October 1940. After the trials, one came to the conclusion that the fighting compartment was much too small. Therefore, the 12 serial vehicles were manufactured from December 1941 to January 1942 based on a lengthened and broadened chassis which is identifiable by the additional roadwheel per side. The vehicles were assigned to s.I.G. Kompanien (mot. S.) 707 and 708 which saw service in North Africa.
