The leichter Beobachtungspanzerwagen (Sd. Kfz. 250/5) – a light armoured observation vehicle – should replaced the Sd. Kfz. 253 of the Sturmartillerie units beginning in 1942. Because the Beobachtungspanzerwagen of the Sturmartillerie units were omitted in this year, the Sd. Kfz. 250/5 was assigned to motorised artillery and other units. This Sd. Kfz. 250/5 was photographed either in North Africa or Italy.

Contrary to the leichter Funkpanzerwagen (Sd. Kfz. 253/3), there was no crew bench in the Beobachtungspanzer- wagen. The radio operator had only a hinged seat. The commander had a seat on the left side behind the stand for the scissor telescope. The Sd. Kfz. 250/5 was also used by Panzer- Aufklärungs-Abteilungen – armoured reconnaissance battalions. Therefore, the leichter Aufklärungspanzerwagen (Sd. Kfz. 250/5) – a light armoured reconnaissance vehicle – was introduced as variant of the Sd. Kfz. 250/5. Later the leichter Beobachtunspanzerwagen was designated as Sd. Kfz. 250/5 I and the leichte Aufklärungs- panzerwagen was designated as Sd. Kfz. 250/5 II.
