Based on the experiences made during battles in built-up areas, a weapon with high explosive force and heavy armour was demanded. Late in 1942, Alkett made a design which met the demands. A first series of 60 Sturmpanzer IV - assault tank IV - was made in May and April 1943. This series was made based on eight reworked chassis of the Ausführungen E and F of the Pz. Kpfw. IV and 52 new chassis of the Ausführung G. 76 vehicles of the second and third series were made from November 1943 to May 1944. These vehicles were made based on new chassis of the Ausführung H and J. Most noticeable change was the new driver’s oriel with driver’s optics. From June 1944 to Februar 1945, altogether 173 vehicles of the fourth series were made. These had a new armoured superstructure with straight frontal armour plate and a commander’s cupola.
