Based on the Panzerkampfwagen IV, a simple Flakpanzer - anti aircraft tank - was created in early 1944. This was designated Flakpanzer IV (3,7 cm Flak 43) (Sd. Kfz. 161/3). The upper armoured superstructure was broadened to create enough space for the pedestal mounted 3,7 cm Flak 43. The fighting platform was protected to all four sides by foldable armour plates. These had to be folded down to horizontal position to engage ground targets. (Photo: German federal archive via Wikimedia Commons; License: Creative Commons BY-SA-3.0-gb)

The gun could be rotated 360° when the side plates were folded up. In this position, only air targets could be engaged. Some units cut a recess into the frontal plate so that ground targets could be engaged into frontal direction when the side plates were folded up. From March 1944 to March 1945, altogether 240 vehicles of this type were made. (Photo: German federal archive via Wikimedia Commons; License: Creative Commons BY-SA-3.0-gb)
