The first three serial vehicles of the gepanzerte Selbstfahrlafette für 7,5 cm Sturmgeschütz 40 - armoured self propelled 7.5 cm assault gun type 40 - (Sd. Kfz. 142) with the longer 7,5 cm Sturmkanone 40 L/43 were manufactured in March 1942. Until September 1942, altogether 364 vehicles were manufactured. At first, the Ausführung F differed from the gepanzerten Selbstfahr- lafette für Sturmgeschütz (7,5 cm Kanone) (Sd. Kfz. 142) Ausführung E only by the longer main gun and an additional ventilator in the roof.

During the production period, the Ausführung F received the improved 7,5 cm Sturmkanone 40 L/48 and a strengthened frontal armour. 250 vehicles of the following series Ausführung F8 were made from September to December 1942. The superstructure remained nearly unchanged. Now, a modified chassis of the 8. Serie Z.W. was used to reduce the differences between the production of the Panzerkampfwagen and Sturmgeschütz.
