The Krankenkraftwagen - ambulance - (Kfz. 31), abbreviated Kr. Kw. (Kfz. 31), was initially manufactured based on the chassis of the l. Lkw. (o) - light lorry (commercial). Therefore, a Kfz. number out of the number range of the l. Lkw. (o) was assigned. These vehicles were mainly Adler W 61 K and Phänomen Granit 25 H. During war, Kr. Kw. (Kfz. 31) were also made based on the Phänomen Granit 1500 S. Only small numbers of the Mercedes-Benz Type L 1500 E were procured. Other vehicles which met the classification criteria of the l. Lkw. (o) were mainly drawn in formerly civilian vehicles.

During war, Kfz. 31 were also delivered based on the chassis of the Phänomen Granit 1500 A and the Steyr 1500 A.
